DARS increases supervision

DARS increases supervision on motorways

The inspectors of the Slovenian Motorway company (DARS) will from now own increase supervision over the use of vignettes during a longer period of time and on certain sections of the motorway system. They also plan to take several actions in cooperation with the police.

DARS decided to take this step because regular supervision demonstrated that a great number of Slovenian drives have been using highways and motorways without a valid vignette. Inspectors of the Slovenian Motorway Company and other authorises bodies (the police, custom officers, the Transport Inspectorate) can issue a fine starting from EUR 300 for driving with an invalid or without a vignette. It is worth adding that 18,862 payment orders have been issued from January 1st 2008 to February 8th 2009.

Luka Koper - First Vessel

Luka Koper - First Vessel Berths At The New Extension Of Pier I

Today a container vessel of the French CMA-CGM line, which provides a regular service between the Adriatic and the Far East, arrived alongside berth 7c on the extension of Pier I, and unloaded and loaded a total of 2,252 TEUs. This is an important event for Luka Koper d.d due to the fact that it is the first vessel to use the recently completed final 96 metres of new quayside. Slovenia's Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning decided to allow the test operation of this facility earlier this month, thus denoting the formal completion of the final phase of an investment project which has seen Pier I extended by 146 metres. The Ministry is expected to issue a permanent operating permit for the new facility following a six-month probationary period. The first 50-metre-long portion of new quayside was commissioned last December.

Although the new quayside area is already in use, Pier I is not - as yet - fully completed. Two new post-panamax cranes will be installed in early June, and two more will be arriving in October. Further to this, the reclamation of the hinterland areas - i.e. the in-filling of the adjacent lagoons - is now underway, and will provide nearly 16,000 m2 of additional storage area for containers.

The extension of Pier I is of strategic importance for Luka Koper, and provides the port with an additional competitive advantage. The new post-panamax cranes will be able to service vessels with 8,000-container capacities. The containerisation of maritime cargo has increased dramatically over recent years, a fact which is also corroborated by January's throughput performance. Despite the economic crisis, the company handled 27,651 TEUs, a volume comparable to January 2008. Overall, 1,500,484 tonnes of cargo passed through the Port of Koper in January, which is 10% ahead of the same period last year, and further proof - if such were necessary - that it is very difficult to accurately anticipate future levels of maritime trade.

This said, however, the economic crisis has impacted the operations of both shipping companies and port operators, Luka Koper included. There has been a considerable - and according to current market conditions inevitable - downturn in the number of new vehicles being shipped through the port, 63% less than in January 2008. A decrease was also recorded in dry bulk cargos. On the other hand, there was a substantial increase in fuels throughput, in particular bulk and liquid cargos. Further to which silo bulks and perishable goods at the Fruit Terminal were also up, which is of considerable significance and importance to Luka Koper's business operations.

Mercator - Sensitive information

The Management is not in the position to comment the decisions of the owners regarding the sale of their investment stakes in the company Mercator, d.d. simply because it has no authority to do so. Each shareholder is independent in its decisions regarding the sale or purchase of shares of the company in line with his/her individual objectives and ambitions.

The Management Board will, however, express its opinion regarding the published intent to sell almost half of the ownership stake in the company Mercator, d.d. to a strategic investor - another retailer. The Management believes that such ownership change would result in considerable impact to the business operations of the Mercator Group. According to the relevant Slovenian legislation the trading company gaining such amount of ownership stake would inevitably have to carry out the takeover of the company by which it would most probably become the major shareholder and owner of the company. Mercator would then become a dependent associated part of another corporate retail chain which would in turn produce substantial consequences related to strategic policy and business operations of the Mercator Group.

The opinion of the Management is that the Mercator Group, as the largest retailer in the region and the largest Slovenian company, is capable of independent development and realization of its business vision and adopted strategic policies and guidelines.

Competitive advantage of the Mercator Group is based on the comprehensive knowledge of the customers and markets in the region, high quality of retail services, competent associates, widespread and varied network of retail outlets, partnership relations with local manufacturers, and strong financial potential.

Capability of pursuing independent future development is substantiated by the following strategic guidelines and business references:

* The Mercator Group with its extensive and diverse retail network provides high quality range of products at affordable prices to its customers. This is confirmed by over 17 million customer calls each month in over 1,200 Mercator shops in the region. The number of customers loyal to Mercator also grows each year, since the number of Mercator Pika loyalty card owners has already exceeded 1.2 million.
* In the last three years the Mercator Group has become leading retail chain in the entire SE Europe which only indicates its international competitive advantages. The revenues of the Group recorded 50% increase in the last three years, reaching the anticipated 2.6 billion EUR at the end of this year. In the year 2005 Mercator recorded merely 16% of revenues outside Slovenia, while this year the forecasts indicate one third of total revenues to be realized abroad. In this period, in addition to maintaining the leading market position in Slovenia the Mercator Group had captured substantial market positions on foreign markets. Namely it has become the second largest retailer both in Serbia and in Croatia, at the same time strengthening its market position in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and entering the market of Montenegro, while planning to make a fresh entry to the market of Bulgaria during the following year.
* The Mercator Group has become one of the largest employers in the region and the largest employer in Slovenia. The Mercator Group today employs more than 21 thousand people, of which over 13 thousand in Slovenia. Providing social security of its associates is an important objective of the Mercator Group, honoring the commitments stipulated in standard workers' contracts and other relevant legislation. Average gross salaries of Mercator employees are approximately 12% higher than the basic figures determined by the standard workers' contract for the branch, which indicates a responsible behavior of the company towards its associates. In addition, the company offers its associates numerous other benefits, ranging from the extensive choice of training and education, use of company holiday resorts, to additional retirement and medical coverage. The company is also currently in process of implementing the system of employee participation in profit, adopted by the shareholders upon the proposal by the company Management and the Supervisory Board at the last meeting of the Assembly.
* Considerable segment of Mercator strategy includes partnership with local food processing industry. In Slovenia, around 70% of Mercator retail shelves is occupied by Slovenian products, and Slovenian suppliers are assisted to access the markets of West Balkan region via Mercator. In Slovenia, Mercator Group cooperates with over 2,000 suppliers, following the long lasting general strategy of the company to collaborate with local manufacturers on all active markets. Mercator assumes that around 30 thousand Slovenian families are economically involved with the company through some form of business collaboration.
* In terms of development and investment activities the Mercator Group is one of the most ambitious companies in the region. In the last three year period the Mercator Group carried out over 750 million EUR worth of investments, including both strategic alliances with other retailers, and intensive development of own retail network. Large extent of investments is the consequence of numerous development opportunities the company had undertaken, as well as its powerful financial position based upon high potential of creating monetary flows, and upon solid capital structure.
* The Mercator Group is well aware of its social accountability and responsibility to and natural environment. On all its active markets Mercator supports numerous humanitarian, cultural, sport, scientific, and other activities of wider social importance. Within these activities in the year 2008 Mercator intends to support financially over 1,800 organizations and projects, while at the level of the Group the number is even higher.

Based on the assumption of further independent development in the region of SE Europe the Management Board has adopted strategic guidelines and midterm business plan of the Mercator Group for the period 2008-2012, approved by the Supervisory Board of the company.

Therefore, the Management Board of the company encourages positive changes in ownership structure which from the aspect of business interest of the company may provide the possibility of steady long term accomplishment of adopted strategic and development guidelines of the Mercator Group as an independent leading corporate retailer in the region of South-East Europe.

Luka Koper achieved a record monthly cargo throughput of 1,605,133 tonnes in October, which is also nearly 20 percent ahead of the average monthly volume for the year as a whole. Between January and October 2008, the company handled 13.5 million tonnes of cargo, some 8 percent more than in the same period in 2007.

Two months prior to year's end, Luka Koper has already accomplished almost 90 percent of its predicted results for 2008. It seems likely that this positive trend will continue over the coming months, thus the company anticipates handling over 16 million tonnes of cargo over the year. These record volumes do not infer that the provision of port and logistics services are immune to global financial crises, but rather that their impact - according to analysts' predictions - is only expected to influence business next year.

This said, however, due to the geo-strategic position of the Port of Koper, the company anticipates that the effects of any impending recession will be greatly mitigated due the increasing gravitation of the markets of Central and Eastern Europe towards Luka Koper in the fulfilment of their overseas trade needs.

Archaeological exhibition

Archaeological exhibition Pharaonic Renaissance will take place in CD Gallery in Ljubljana on 4th March till 20th July 2008. This extensive exhibition provides archaeological evidence on one of the more interesting periods in the history of ancient Egyptian civilisation. It brings together items from the majority of Western Europe's most important Egyptology collections.
Archaism and Historical Value in Old Egyptian Art
04 Mar 2008 - 20 Jul 2008
Cankarjev dom (cultural and congress centre), Presernova 10, Galerija CD / CD Galllery

The Pharaonic Renaissance was the period in Egyptian history from the early 7th to the mid-6th centuries BC, when the 25th and 26th Dynasties were in power. It followed a period of the New Kingdom's political and economic crisis. Its flourishing culture found expression in increased appreciation of the past and recognition of the cultural identity of Egyptian civilisation on the one hand and the use of new forms of expression on the other.

The Pharaonic Renaissance anticipated, in many aspects, the thoughts and beliefs passed on to the traditions of the present Europe by the culture of classical antiquity.
The Pharaonic Renaissance exhibition, curated by the Italian Egyptologist Francesco Tiradritti PhD, includes items borrowed from the British Museum in London, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Egyptian Museums in Berlin and Munich, and several Italian, Austrian, Hungarian and Croatian museums and collections.

More information:
Ljubljana Tourist Information Centre - TIC
Address: Adamič-Lundrovo nabrezje 2, 1000 Ljubljana
Phone: +386 (0)1 306 12 15

Event starts : 1.7.2008
Event ends : 31.7.2008
Place of event : Koper

The Primorska summer festival celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. Above all it includes theatre and dance performances, while its speciality is that they are held in the open air, in natural venues in coastal places, in the ambience of old town cores, markets and streets from which it is sought to draw attention to the special value of cultural heritage and to which the performances give a special summer pulse. The festival is a producer of new theatrical performances and production premieres as well as at the same time a host of performances from Slovenia and abroad. We work in summer when outdoor events are lent good weather and simultaneously we would like to enrich the tourist offer with high-quality events.

Administrator :
Turisticno informativni center Koper
Phone : ++386 5 664 62 17
tic@koper.si
